This Research Topic focuses on the state-of-the-art in cognitive-inspired aspects of robot learning. It is an associated activity of the Latin American Summer School on Cognitive Robotics (LACORO). This Research Topic welcomes novel contributions to new theoretical methods and applications that align with the topics covered in LACORO.
The Latin American Summer School on Cognitive Robotics (LACORO) is an international event that aims at making cutting-edge knowledge on Artificial Intelligence for Robotics Applications accessible to everyone, especially in the Southern Hemisphere. Moreover, LACORO wishes to foster intercultural student collaboration within and outside the Americas.
LACORO primarily targets later-year Engineering Students, MSc students, Ph.D. Students, Academics, and Professionals. Although LACORO will be organized in Latin America, LACORO is open to participants worldwide. We also look forward to building a sustainable community of students, academics, and professionals in Artificial Intelligence for Robotics, particularly Cognitive Inspired Aspects of AI.

This special issue will include state-of-the-art research on emerging topics on development and learning in natural and artificial systems. In addition to new submissions, papers presented at ICDL-EpiRob 2020 will be invited to submit extended versions to the special issue. All submissions, including those that are based on ICDL-EpiRob 2020 papers, will be reviewed as regular TCDS papers.
This special issue has a focus on development and learning from a multidisciplinary perspective gathering researchers from computer science, robotics, psychology, and developmental studies. We invite researchers to share knowledge and research on how humans and animals develop sensing, reasoning and actions, and how to exploit robots as research tools to test models of development and learning. We expect the submitted contributions emphasize the interaction with social and physical environments and how cognitive and developmental capabilities can be transferred to computing systems and robotics. This approach goes hand in hand with the goals of both understanding human and animal development and applying this knowledge to improve future intelligent technology, including for robots that will be in close interaction with humans.

This full-day workshop will investigate the sensorimotor and affective mechanisms that underlie human-robot interaction. Non-verbal and affective cues and expressions used to foster cooperation, mutual understanding and signal trustworthiness are manifested by humans all the time. If these cues are not appropriately reciprocated, however, the interaction can be negatively impacted. Moreover, inappropriate reciprocation, or lack thereof, may be the result of misperception and or non-timely reactions. Failure to adequately account for biologically plausible perceptual and temporal facets of interactions may detract from the quality of human-robot interaction and hinder progress in the field of social robotics more generally.
